Christchurch Hit by Twin Earthquakes
Magnitude 4.4 and 6.2 Quakes Strike South Island
Christchurch, New Zealand has been rocked by two earthquakes this morning, one with a magnitude of 4.4 and the other with a magnitude of 6.2. The earthquakes hit at 9:14am and 9:20am local time, respectively, and were centered near the town of Geraldine, about 100 kilometers northwest of Christchurch.
The magnitude 4.4 quake was preceded by a foreshock, and was followed by a series of aftershocks. The magnitude 6.2 quake was the strongest to hit the South Island of New Zealand since a magnitude 6.6 quake struck in November 2016.
There have been no reports of injuries or damage from the earthquakes. However, the quakes have caused some disruption to transportation and power, and some schools and businesses have been closed as a precaution.
The earthquakes are a reminder of the seismic activity that is common in New Zealand. The country is located on the Pacific Ring of Fire, a seismically active region that stretches around the Pacific Ocean.
Scientists are still studying the earthquakes to determine what caused them. However, they say that the quakes are not likely to be related to the recent volcanic activity on the North Island of New Zealand.
