Rory MacDonald Announces Retirement After TKO Loss
Former UFC Welterweight Contender Calls It Quits
MacDonald announced his retirement less than 24 hours after suffering a TKO loss to Dilano Taylor in a 2022 PFL bout.
Rory MacDonald, a former UFC welterweight contender, has announced his retirement from mixed martial arts. The announcement came less than 24 hours after MacDonald suffered a TKO loss to Dilano Taylor in a 2022 PFL bout.
MacDonald, who was born on July 22, 1989, in Quesnel, British Columbia, Canada, began his MMA career in 2005. He quickly rose through the ranks, winning the King of the Cage welterweight championship in 2009. In 2010, he signed with the UFC and made his debut at UFC 129, where he defeated Nate Diaz.
MacDonald went on to become one of the top welterweights in the UFC, challenging for the title on two occasions. He lost both title fights, but he remained a top contender and was widely regarded as one of the best fighters in the division.
MacDonald's retirement announcement comes as a surprise to many fans, as he was still considered to be one of the best welterweights in the world. However, MacDonald has said that he has been considering retirement for some time and that the loss to Taylor was the final straw.
"I've been thinking about retiring for a while now," MacDonald said. "I've had a lot of injuries and I'm not the same fighter I used to be. I'm not sure if I can still compete at the highest level and I don't want to be a gatekeeper. I want to go out on top."
