Starmer Meets Zelensky, Pledges Unwavering Support for Ukraine
Historic Visit Marks First by Labour Leader Since Russian Invasion
Corbyn's Successor Continues to Distance Party from Kremlin Accusations
Kyiv, Ukraine - In a historic move, Sir Keir Starmer, the leader of the British Labour Party, met with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday. This marks Starmer's first visit to the war-torn country since Russia launched its invasion in February 2022.
Starmer's visit is seen as a significant gesture of support for Ukraine and its battle against Russian aggression. Since becoming Labour leader in 2020, Starmer has consistently condemned Russia's actions and called for a united international response.
The meeting with Zelensky comes as Starmer seeks to further distance his party from former leader Jeremy Corbyn, who had been accused of being too sympathetic to Russia. Starmer has spent the past four years trying to rid British voters of the notion that Labour is unpatriotic or pro-Kremlin.
Starmer is also expected to attend the NATO summit in Madrid alongside US President Joe Biden and the leaders of 30 other NATO nations. The summit will focus on Ukraine's war with Russia and the continuing threats to European security.
