Record-Breaking Solar Flare Erupts From the Sun

X13 flare, the strongest class of solar flare, emits powerful radiation

Scientists monitor solar activity for potential impact on Earth's communications and power grids

NASA has recorded two explosions on the surface of the sun, unleashing powerful solar flares. The first flare, an X13 flare, erupted from sunspot region AR3777 on August 8, 2024, at 1935 UTC. X flares are the strongest solar flare class, emitting intense radiation and charged particles. The second flare, an X2.2 flare, erupted from the same sunspot region on August 9, 2024, at 0005 UTC. Solar flares can cause disruptions to Earth's communications and power grids, as well as pose hazards to astronauts and satellites. Scientists are monitoring the activity on the sun closely to assess the potential impact on Earth.
