Margaret Atwood, Salman Rushdie, and Ali Smith among 13 authors in the running for the prestigious literary award

British-American author Percival Everett is the only man to make the shortlist for this year's Booker Prize, with women making up more than half of the list, the jury announced on Tuesday.

Everett is nominated for his novel, "The Trees," a story about a lynching in the American South. The 13-strong list also includes Margaret Atwood for "The Testaments," Salman Rushdie for "Quichotte," and Ali Smith for "Summer."

This year's shortlist is the most international in the prize's 53-year history, with authors from six different countries represented. The winner will be announced on October 14.
